2013 Winter Carnival

The Vernon Pigeon and Poultry Club recently hosted its 44^th Feather Fancier Show in conjunction with Vernon’s Winter Carnival. The show featured a full competitive pigeon show and a judged novice poultry competition for those new or nearly new to the hobby. Orie Moore from WA was the pigeon judge and he had about 300 birds to evaluate. Club president Dudley DeLeenheer judged the novice show of about 90 entries consisting of bantams, large fowl and bantam ducks.

A silver collection admitted the general public which seemed to appreciate the variety of birds. A well stocked concession provided a variety of food items for most tastes. The antique and collectible show and sale also attracted interest. The event was well attended, especially during the performance of the Back Yard Band and the Rooster Crowing Competition. Queen and Princess Silver Star, Jopo and Jopette, (the Winter Carnival mascot clowns) and the Karnival Kops were in attendance to enhance the carnival atmosphere of the show.

Grand Champion pigeon was a white Jacobin by Jason Nicholls and Grand Champion poultry was a Black Australorp female by Andrew Laird. It was nice to see quite a number of junior competitors at the show.
